Event on Photography and Contemporary Art at Manchester Art Gallery

Yesterday I gave a talk at an event on ‘Photography and Contemporary Art’ at the Manchester Art Gallery on the subject of ‘late’ or ‘aftermath photography’. I discussed works by Anthony Haughey and Joel Sternfeld, as well as the Israeli photographers Roi Kuper and Gilad Ophir. Their photographs show the remains of events or processes of destruction and decay, presenting us with evocative images that give us little to go on, though much in terms of richness of detail and colour, and bring us face-to-face with the otherness of the past as something that we no longer have access to.

Various other interesting talks were given at the event, including a fascinating talk by the contemporary photographic artist Gayle Chong Kwan.
